LES MISERABLES: SCHOOL EDITION | ages 12+

Music by Claude-Michel Schonberg
Lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer
Original French Text by Alain Boublil & Jean-Marc Natel

Based on the novel by Victor Hugo

Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France and the aftermath of the French Revolution, former convict Jean Valjean’s quest for a new life carries him into the barricades of a student revolution, where he is haunted by the ghosts of his past. Amidst a battle for the soul of Paris, he discovers the true meaning of love and salvation. Epic, grand, and uplifting, Les Misérables is one of the world’s most beloved, and longest running musicals. The School Edition is a slightly abridged, full-length (2-hour) production that preserves the integrity of this musical masterpiece.  Limited to 20 Students

PLEASE READ ALL OF THE FOLLOWING SCHEDULE INFORMATION COMPLETELY BEFORE REGISTERING YOUR STUDENT!

The Musical Theater Ensemble is a two-semester program, meeting on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00PM-8:00PM, beginning on September 19, 2022 and ending May 3, 2023. Performances will take place the weekend of May 5, 2023.

There will likely be extended rehearsals during the final show week. All students enrolled in the Musical Theater Ensemble MUST be able to be fully present for rehearsals and performances from May 1-7, 2023. STAGES will make every effort to accommodate the schedule constraints, within reason, for our cast members and families. The final show week schedule will be determined early in 2023.

The Ensemble will NOT MEET on the following dates: Monday October 10 (Indigenous Peoples’ Day), Monday October 31 (Halloween), the week of November 21 (Thanksgiving Week), the weeks of December 19 & December 26 (Winter Recess), Monday January 16 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day), the week of February 20 (February School Vacation Week), Wednesday March 22 (First Day of Ramadan), Wednesday April 5 (First Night of Passover), and the week of April 17 (April School Vacation Week).

Tuition: $795.00 for this 2-semester/8-month program (multiple, customizable, installment plan options available)

Please note: We hope and expect to be able to perform this production in our theater next spring for a live in-person audience. We also acknowledge the COVID-19 pandemic is still evolving in ways we may not be able to predict. In the event of a pandemic-related or other disruption that would make in-person rehearsals and performances impossible, this program (inclusive of all Master Classes, rehearsals and production) will transition seamlessly (in whole or in part) to an online format with a digital presentation.

WE RESPECTFULLY ASK THAT YOU DO NOT REGISTER FOR THIS PROGRAM IF YOU/YOUR STUDENT ARE UNWILLING TO PARTICIPATE IN AN ONLINE FORMAT SHOULD THE NEED ARISE. There will be NO refunds for this program unless it is formally and fully cancelled (without in-person or online options) for any reason.

What is it? The STAGES Musical Theater Ensemble is a fun, and empowering musical theater acting and ensemble-building program for students ages 12 and up. It spans both the fall and spring semester, and culminates in a fully-staged presentation of an exciting, ensemble-based Broadway musical. The 2022-23 Production will be LES MISERABLES: SCHOOL EDITION.

What makes the Musical Theater Ensemble different from past Musical Theater productions at STAGES? The season-long program format provides more space and time for students to create a tight-knit performance company. Like the STAGES Acting (formerly Shakespeare) Ensemble (now in its 14th year), the Musical Theater Ensemble program accommodates more interaction with the STAGES production team, giving Members a more in-depth stewardship of their production. Under the facilitation and guidance of the Ensemble mentors, students will have more time to reflect on and explore their musical’s themes and characters, and have more agency in casting, direction, and design.

How much music/acting/dance experience is expected of students participating in the Musical Theater Ensemble? All experience levels are welcome — and NO experience is required! Any relevant instruction or training will be provided as part of the production process. All we ask of our Musical Theater Ensemble students is enthusiasm, openness to learning new things, and a desire to work collaboratively for the entire school year with fellow ensemble members and mentors.

Is it possible to participate in the Musical Theater Ensemble and the Acting (formerly Shakespeare) Ensemble? Yes. It would be possible for one student to participate in both programs if desired. The Musical Theater Ensemble and the Acting Ensemble meet/rehearse on different days of the week, and the spring performance weekends do not overlap. Families should review the schedule detail for both programs before deciding how to proceed.

“STAGES got me more interested in theater!  Everybody’s nice, you get to make friends, it’s like a family! When I was 10, I didn’t know what it would be like on stage. But when I finally got up on there with confidence, there was a spark in me. The more shows I was in, the more… Continue reading Sarah Krause, STAGES Alum
